Dinner was passable, as the integrity of most of the vegetables had been compromised with the additional unplanned cooking time. I had the stove up too high—my fault. Mike didn’t care, and apart from the fact I wanted to show him the best of my cooking and only ended up displaying the mediocre, I didn’t either.

Mike was a different person when he was comfortable, stripped of his suit, laid back in only sweatpants and a cotton T-shirt, with one arm flung over the back of the leather couch and an invitation for me to slide in next to him. The sound of his heart beating as I rested my head on his chest was soothing. Although the beats were a little faster than they should be, I put that down to his stress over the situation with his ex. I didn’t ask what he expected me to do tomorrow and if he wanted me to take another sick day and stay in his apartment again because, right now, tomorrow didn’t matter.

We watched Citizen Kane because Mike was floored I hadn’t seen it.

“We aren’t all so cultured, you know,” I quipped, loving the feel of his chest as he chuckled.

“I keep forgetting you’re a grease monkey at heart.”

I laughed. He wasn’t wrong.

Tracing the lines of Mike’s chest muscles with my fingertips until I could barely keep my eyes open, we moved to the bedroom, and any tiredness I felt evaporated. Mike lay me down on the mattress, and I grabbed his arms when he moved to get off the bed. He chuckled. “I’m just going to turn the main lights off.”

“What? You don’t have a clapper? I thought you were classy.”

Mike laughed as he padded his way to the main room and switched off all the lights on his way back. Then in the dark, he moved to the window and threw open the curtains, bathing the room in a dull glow from the moonlight outside. The lights of the cityscape blinked to their own tune, and I watched the outline of Mike’s shape as he moved toward the bed, the mattress sinking under his weight as he sat. He stared out the window, and I moved along the bed, coming up behind him and kneeling, wrapping my arms around his neck and resting my chin on his shoulder. Mike’s hand came up and cupped my forearm, squeezing slightly but saying nothing.

“You’re worried, aren’t you?”

“If he comes for you, I might have no choice but to kill him, and if I do that, I’ll go away, and you’ll never see me again.”

Kill him?

My arms tensed around his shoulders, the confession had come from nowhere, and I swallowed heavily, keeping my emotions in check as I tried to comfort the man I had my arms wrapped around. Was Mike overreacting, or was I not taking this situation seriously enough? I tried to keep my voice steady. “Why would you have to kill him?”

“I know him, and he hates me. I fear he’ll try to use you to get to me.
